The Tulo Home Run

From MLB’s Gameday. The second pitch on the outside part of the plate is the pitch Troy Tulowitzki hit for a home run in the fifth inning of last night’s game. It was a cutter. Jon Niese left it a little bit up, but it’s also outside, and maybe even gets called a ball. The point being: it wasn’t a terrible pitch. It wasn’t a great pitch, but it wasn’t a terrible pitch, either. Tulowitzki, who just so happens to be a great hitter, reached out and poked to the short corner in the opposite field. That happens sometimes.

And that, more or less, sums up the Mets’ problems right now. They’re not playing terribly, but they’re not playing great either. This leaves them little margin for error. So when one or two things don’t go their way, or a great hitter hits a decent pitch, they lose. But those little things eventually start to even out. The pitching, the bullpen especially, has been bad — they’re allowing 5.73 runs per game — but there’s also no way it will be this bad all year. It’s a long season: the pitching will get a little better, some balls will roll the Mets way, and everything will look up again.

At the very least, the Mets only have to see Troy Tulowitzki three more times after today.

  1. thats the gameday interface you get? i was viewing game 1 today on gameday from work (until the internet filter kicked in -_-) and it seems quite updated, its almost as if i was playing MLB the show. It has the stadium, hot&cold zones, and hitter&pitcher preferences/tendencies, and even a “nasty factor” for each pitch. if they made it any cooler it might be more fun than actually watching the game on tv haha.

No no, I see the cool version of Gameday. I just couldn’t figure out how to get the pitch locations to display, so I had to take the screen shot from the classic version. But the new one is way better.

  2. and i agree with what you said, the mets pitching has been bad AND unlucky, and that combination makes things look worse than they really are.
