Fangraphs, or Notgraphs, or whatever, has an excellent post breaking down Tom Seaver’s comments re: Johan Santana’s no-hitter. You should read it. But I’m going to ruin the punchline for you because this story needs to be told.
Here’s Tom Seaver’s statement, via MetsBlog, after Santana’s no-hitter.
“Honestly, not having a no-hitter was an anomaly. It’s great to get this off the franchise’s back. Now they can’t say the Mets are without a no-hitter. I’ve never met Johan personally, but, what I’ve heard about him is that he has a big heart and is a huge competitor. I didn’t watch the game last night. I found out when I picked up the morning paper. My first reaction was ‘Wow, they finally did it.’”

SNY had a long interview with both of them in the same room a year or two ago. I remember Tom asking Johan how many wins he had when trying to determine if he had a chance at 300. I was confused at Tom’s comment also. I thought “Why do I remember Tom meeting Johan when Tom doesn’t??”
My best guess is that Tom Seaver didn’t actually write his comment, and a confused PR person did. Is that the simplest answer?
I think the key word there is ‘personally’ actually. Tom probably views those appearances as work related. I think he meant he’s never hung out with Johan or talked to him casually.
Or Seaver is drunk on wine for every Mets appearance. He’d still be better than Manny Acosta though.
